Mayor of the City and Municipality of Sztum
Contract of 02.09.2025
Investor: Przedsiębiorstwo Wodociągów i Kanalizacji w Sztumie Sp. z o. o.
Investment value: 71 779 353,54 PLN
Investment type: build
Technology type: Membrane Bioreactor (MBR)
Realization description
Upon completion of the works, Sztum will boast the second-largest facility of its kind in the country utilizing MBR (Membrane Bioreactor) technology, regarded as the so-called fourth stage of treatment (quaternary treatment). This technology allows for water purification of nearly 100%, including the removal of microplastics and pharmaceuticals.
In Sztum, the MBR system (membrane filtration of activated sludge) will consist of two parallel process trains – each with an average capacity of 1,650 m³/d.
- Average facility capacity after modernization: 5,500 m³/d
- Maximum capacity: 6,200 m³/d
- Inflow: Average of 165 m³/h and a maximum of up to 413 m³/h.
The task involves the reconstruction of the wastewater treatment plant area through the construction of a new process building, the demolition and reconstruction of the administration and technical facility in a new location, and the construction of new structures operating with improved technology. This proceeds alongside the transfer of connections (cut-over) from the currently used networks to the new ones and the decommissioning of existing buildings and equipment.
The process building is planned to house the following sections: mechanical sewage treatment installation, blower station, membrane maintenance installation, hypochlorite and reagent dosing systems, sludge dewatering, and containers for dewatered sludge. The administration and technical building will house rooms necessary for operating the plant and sewer network infrastructure. Other facilities planned for construction include those of technological significance. Beyond the indicated works, the project also covers the construction of internal roads, squares, sidewalks, and greenery planting/landscaping.
The reconstruction and modernization of the facility had become a necessity. The current plant was last modernized in 1997, i.e., 28 years ago. The treated water is discharged into water corridors and catchments covered by the Natura 2000 program and the Protected Landscape Area of the Nogat/Vistula Valley.
According to the contract, the works are scheduled for completion by the end of September 2027.
